Again, Good Housekeeping examined over 100 products in all price ranges from drugstore and beauty supply store bargains to pricer brands sold in salons.
Permanent Hair Color
GOLD WINNER - REVLON COLORSILK WITH UV DEFENSE (3.69 drugstore)This took top honors in lab performance in covering gray immediately and at four weeks. It also scored high marks for fade resistance
SILVER WINNER - Couture Color $30 (Sephora) This was a close second overall. But why would you pay $30 over $3.69??
Demi-Permanent Haircolor
GOLD WINNER - CLAIROL NATURAL INSTINCTS $9 (drugstore) It placed first in the lab for both initial and final gray coverage and for shine reteneion on hair swatches. At home, after using Natural Instincts, testers found their hair color was the likeliest to actually match the color swatch
SILVER WINNER - GARNIER HERBASHINE COLOR CREME WITH BAMBOO EXTRACT $8 (drugstore) This brand got kudos from panelists for covering grays and providing rich, even color as well as being the easiest to apply.
Use demi-permanent color if you are 30% gray. Those who are 70% gray the color looks more washed out.
