ARREST MADE IN THEFT OF SUNDAY PAPERS

As a result of the show "Extreme Couponing" many people are stealing newspapers. Some pay for one paper at the box and then proceed to empty it. But a lady in Springdale, AK, took it one step further. She went to a local grocery store in the evening when the papers were placed outside for pickup and she loaded them in her car! She said that she asked a cashier if she could have them and was told yes. She went back each week for 7 weeks, missing 1 week when she was on vacation. Apparently, the papers are placed outside for product accountability and were not available for anyone to take.

Eventually, according to the police report, the numbers of papers taken increased over the weeks. Their system predicts the number of papers needed for a location based on how many were returned. When no papers were returned for several weeks, the publishing company went to the grocery store because the sales figures did not match with the numbers they were scanning.

Overall, she took 185 newspapers over 7 weeks at $1.25 each. The total was $231.25.

All because of being in an Extreme Couponing Club, this lady now has an attorney bill to pay and an arrest record of a felony misdemenor not to mention the embarassment her family has to endure.

My two cents on this whole thing is that some people have taken this to levels that are unethical. When you steal a newspaper, you are taking money out of the carrier's pocket. He/she is held accountable for the newspapers. If you feel the need to get extra coupons, buy them from a reputable clipping service. That is what I do when I need extras. It is very inexpensive and you know you can put your head on your pillow at night at sleep!
